The story of the steam clock

Another memory

This steam clock is a replica of just such a clock built by a Canadian horologist in 1977 in Gastown, a famous tourist area in Vancouver. Made of bronze, it weighs 1.5 tons and measures 5.5 meters in height and 1 meter across.

While the clock itself runs on electricity, a computer carefully controls various processes whereby steam is generated in a boiler, the time is signaled once an hour, and a five-scale melody is played every fifteen minutes through the release of steam. This steam clock is situated in front of the Main Hall of the Otaru Music Hall Museum and is highly popular as a backdrop for commemorative photographs.
